IS IT REALLY 10 PERCENT?????
Most of us have already heard about our brain activity that we can only use 10% of the entire brain. 66 percent of Americans still believe that we can only use 10 percent of our brain. But this is not true, just a myth. Neurologist Barry Gordon reported that the majority of the brain is almost always active.
We can measure brain activity with the help of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). It shows that most of our brain is active while doing multiple tasks or single tasks. When we sleep or take rest at that time, a lot of our brain stays active. So we can loudly say we don't use only 10% of our brains but more than 10%.
There is lots of confusion about how this 10% myth came and spread like a virus. There is also a belief among scientists that neurons make up around 10 percent of the brain’s cells. From here 10% might get its theory.
Human brain is the most complex part of our body an we are still unaware about different brain functions like we don't know much about our subconscious mind. Though we do know that the subconscious mind is more powerful than our conscious mind.
Subconscious mind controls the internal health system while the conscious mind helps to coordinate with the outside world. But we can control only our conscious mind not subconscious mind. But there are certain ways which can help us to control our subconscious mind also. It will also increase the intelligence level. The cerebellum-parietal component and the frontal component are directly associated with intelligence. The parietal and frontal regions are also connected with intelligence by maintaining structural networks with the cerebellum and the temporal region, respectively.
Every human being can always increase their intelligence level by changing on their diet and with the help of daily exercises. Some food items which can increase Brain activity level.
1. Fatty Fish
This type of fish includes salmon, trout and sardines, which are all rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. About 60% of our brain is made of fat, and half of that fat is the omega-3 kind. Omega-3 helps to build brain and nerve cells, and these fats are essential for learning and memorizing abilities.
2. Coffee
Coffee contains two main components. They are caffeine and antioxidants which have a positive effect on the brain. Caffeine blocks adenosine, a chemical messenger that makes you sleepy and keeps the brain awake. Caffeine may also boost your serotonin which makes you feel good. Drinking coffee for the long time is also linked to a reduced risk of neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
3. Broccoli
Broccoli is a plant compound which contains vitamin k and antioxidants. This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for forming sphingolipids which is a type of fat that’s densely packed into brain cells. Vitamin k also increases memory and protects the brain from several damages.
4. Fruits & Nuts
We all know that Fruits and nuts have several health benefits. But along with that they also increase our brain health. The antioxidants in fruits help brain cells to communicate firmly and also increase memory and keep safe from brain disease like short term memory loss.
Nuts have fats, antioxidants and vitamin E. Vitamin E shields cell membranes from free radical damage, helping slow mental decline. While all nuts are good for your brain, walnuts gives a extra benefits as they also deliver omega-3 fatty acids.
5. Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate and cocoa powder contain few brain-boosting compounds, including flavonoids, caffeine and antioxidants.Flavonoids are a group of antioxidant plant compounds that deal with learning and memory function of the brain. Scientists say these compounds may enhance memory and also help slow down age-related mental decline.
Along with diet, exercise also plays a vital role in brain health status. Exercise maintains blood circulation in the body and manages the nervous system. Exercise on a daily basis can increase the speed of Brain activity.
There are some other myths like alcohol can damage brain tissue while for men it does not affect but on pregnant women it affects, the new born baby from that woman may have some brain difficulties.
Some Interesting Facts of Brain
The weight of a Brain is 2% of the body but it consumes 20% of calories and oxygen.
Most of the Brain is made of liquid, around 73% of water.
Cholesterol is not good for the heart while without it the brain would not survive.
Brain loses 70% of its energy to body health.
