Why Did Shiva Named As Adi Yogi
According to Hindu triumvirate, there are three supreme gods and LORD Shiva is one of them. These three supreme gods are responsible for the creation, upkeep and destruction of the world. The other two gods are Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva's role is to destroy the universe in order to re-create it.
At the ancient times, when human just began to learn about knowledge and they didn't know about positive energies(god's) or negative energies(devil).
At that circumstance, Shiva was showed up at the upper Himalayas, sitting on the ground on a meditative state. People who had seen him didn't understand why he is sitting like that, because to them it was impossible for somone to sit like that way for a longer period of time. Due to curiosity, they used to come to him to ask questions. But Shiva didn't wake up because his Samadi was profound to such an extent that nothing can divert him from this.
One day the seven sages get to learn about the situation. so they came to see this. These seven sages are the sons of Lord Brambha, they are also called as Saptarishi. They were very intelligent and knowledgeable persons. After seeing Shiva, sitting on ground, unbelievably stable, they got surprised but as an intelligent being they try to find out why he is sitting like that. After communicating with each other they come to a conclusion that he(Shiva) must have found something inside which is obviously better than the rest of the world. Saptarshies were so curious to learn what Shiva find inside. so they sat infront of him and try to follow him by sitting steady and shutting their eyes..the time was running away months and years were passing away.
After a very long time One day Shiva opens his eyes and see the seven sages, sitting infront of him are shining like stars.shiva called them and ask for the questions they have..the Saptarshies asked for a Clarification. Shiva exposed all of his knowledge about yoga, illution, universe, science and so on. after receiving the ultimate knowledge from Shiva, they went back to society to spread the knowledge to the human beings..The Seven Sages(Saptarshies) named Shiva as ADI JOGI(The First Yogi).
